I have been having problems with my teeth for the last month or so. I just had 4 teeth removed because my former dentist didn't discover that I had gum disease. Now my top gums are starting to swell and the new dentist is saying that I need a deep cleaning asap. I'm already terrified of the dentist and now I have to go through this. Any one have suggestions on how I can calm down before going to have this done? Also the cost for this is 400 bucks, a 100 for each quad. Does this sound right to anyone?

Deep Cleaning and prices.?
If you have 4 teeth removed due to the gum disease , you must have chronic periodontitis?! That's the reason you need deep cleaning (scaling and root planning). You can expect some discomfort, but it will probably be much less than you fear. Although about half of patients reported feeling fearful of pain before they were treated, less than 10 percent reported feeling any extreme discomfort or pain from treatment, according to a poll by the American Academy of Periodontology. So relax.. take some Tylenol before the procedure should help!
Price really depends on the dentist (location, staff, experience..). In my office, we charge $60 per quad and $240 total but then again, we don't specialize in periodontics.

As far as calming down, maybe knowing that you are not getting taken to the cleaners will help.

Reply:$100.00 a quad is it? Whew, that is cheap! We charge $215.00 a quad, so yeah I would say that is cheap. Also, if you want to save your teeth for as long as possible, get this done. There is no cure for periodontal disease, just treatments. It wont be as bad as you think, if you get a great hygientist or dentist.

They numb you up before they start the deep cleaning...they didn't numb me before they started the regular cleaning portion so that was just as uncomfortable as any cleaning is...nothing you can't stand but the deep cleaning was fine...you mostly feel pressure...and just a little pain. I AM SOOO GLAD I WAS ABLE TO HAVE IT DONE! I HAD NO PAIN AFTER I LEFT THE DENTIST OFFICE! I was soooo scared to have this done...I was terrified! I almost chickened out! lol! email me and I will give you tips on where you might can have it done cheaper than $400! I got it done REALLY cheap!! They were amazed at the results even from one week to the next as far as my pockets went! TMJ Splints. How much are they?
I know you can go to a store like wal mart and get one for like 20 bucks. Those irritate my jaw even more. I had a emergency splint made where it fit my 2 front teeth. It fell out of my bag while I was traveling. Anyone know how much that would cost without insurance? Don' t wanna go another night grinding my teeth in my sleep. Hurts too much.

Some dental advice about whitening! PLEASE!?
So its a big deal the whole teeth whitening thing! And well im a big coffee drinker! and i smoke socially! And well they arent YELLOW YELLOW! they are just starting to look stained from all the starbucks. So please help me. i know everyone says "Crest whitening strips" but when i used it, it didnt whiten the bottom of my teeth..it didnt completely work for me. So are there any secrets without having to pay 400 bucks at the dental office!

How to get a puppy to stop nipping?
any suugestions on effectively training a puppy (13 weeks) to STOP NIPPING when over excited...its getting really annoying plus I have a 2 year old and its not practical to have the puppy wait to the teeth fall out...I am also trying to avoid having to pay 100 bucks for obediance class...

Reply:you definitely need to take care of that asap with the baby around... here's what i did... it may sound cruel, but it worked... whenever our dog would open her mouth to nip or nip us, i would hold her mouth shut until she yelped and i would say "no bite". this showed her that if she did the unwanted action, she would have to face the consequences. it took a few times, but after that, she wouldn't open her mouth to us at all. now (5 years later), she won't even play bite. it is important for you, as the owner, not to let her play bite. don't make it a game. it's not fun. don't snuggle with her after you punish her... just let her be.

To temporarily stop her spray and if practical, spray the areas she's nipping or biting with vinegar. It won't hurt you, your baby, the dog or your furniture. But it will deter her. My husband and I have to continually spray our feet and sometimes our hands because or puppy would not leave them alone. It works....try it.
Puppies nip and bite when they want to play...they chew when they are teething or bored. Give her rawhide to chew and remember to spray all the other things she has an interest in chewing. A paste made with Alum and applied to furniture also deters chewing.
My husband and I have used these practices and they work. We have not lost one single thing in the house due to chewing.

Custom made nightguard versus storebought?
My dentist says he see evidence that I grind my teeth and that if we do nothing - there is risk I could break off part or all of some top teeth. So he recommends a "nightguard" - a thing that looks kind of like a boxer's mouthguard. The cost? About $800 after they made a cast of my teeth and mold the thing. (Yow!) Walking through the local grocery store drugs isle I saw they sell generic nightguards for just 25 bucks. My question: is a custom made $800 nightguard really going to do me much more good than the $25 one from Safeway??

Just to add to the discussion on fees... I have two levels of service in "night guards." One is the generic night guard and it costs $425. I say "generic," but even this appliance is made using a bite registration made at a predetermined open OVD in with the condyles in centric relation. I NEVER take impressions and write an Rx saying, "Make night guard."
The other type I make is more of an orthotic appliance. It takes a few visits to actually complete the thing. It starts out life similar to the NTI Plus, but after a week of 24/7 wear, I add the posterior bite plane. The design will allow the mandible to self-locate for correct centric and then provide stable posterior contact with anterior guidance. This is a multi-visit procedure. I usually locate and adjust away the first few interferences to make centric occlusion more coincident with centric relation at one of the follow-up visits. There is no additional charge for this. My fee for this appliance and related visits is presently $800.
What I'm getting at is that we really don't know what type of night guard Mainer is getting.
And in case you have not guessed by now, I am not a big advocate of store-bought, one size fits all night guards. IF you just happen to fit the average that the appliance was designed to fit, you might get away with it. There's one that has a pad on each side for the molars to bite on. The pads are joinded by some kind of an arch to stablize them. It costs more like $60. If anything store-bought would stand a chance of fitting without doing damage, I think this would be it.

Are your jaws sore or tired in the morning ?Does any one hear you grinding at nite . The condition is called bruxism and if severe can be destructive to the dentition but in that case you should have some symptoms of aching teeth and tired jaw muscles upon waking .

Reply:Mine cost $400. My Dentist suggested not to use the store bought ones as they are soft and one tends to "chew" these and can actually shift the teeth and cause damage by itself. I would go with a professional guard but I would not pay $800.

Reply:Mine cost $400. My Dentist suggested not to use the store bought ones as they are soft and one tends to "chew" these and can actually shift the teeth and cause damage by itself. I would go with a professional guard but I would not pay $800.
Reply:i used to be a dental assistant. i would go with the custom made guard but $800 is ridiculous! and you can tell your dr that! more like $300 at the most!
