How do I get my 3yr old son to stop sucking his thumb?

He just turned 3 on the 10th and has always sucked his thumb. I dont want to be mean to him and make him break that habit, but he carries a blankie too. His teeth are starting to buck. Any suggestions?? :) I know that he wont suck his thumb forever...ha

coming from a thumb sucker - you can try everything, but if he wants it, he'll still suck it. I'm not real proud of this - but I did until the 5th grade (at night) my parents had tried everything, taking away my blanket, the nasty tasting liquid you put on it, retainers with metal bars, etc. What finally got me to stop - the Dentist put in a retainer with actual spikes in the roof of my mouth, and cemented it in. Sad but true - I think the earlier you try, the more successful you'll be :) Best wishes!
Reply:There is a sour or bitter stuff you can buy a the store and put on it , it tastes awful. You can also try Tabasco, as far as his blankie, thats normal for a 3 yr old to carry around
Reply:tape it,, use pepper, hot sauce....
Reply:Use anything spicy or really hot because he may not like the taste of hot sauce or anything hot. So next time he thinks about sucking his thumb he will remember the taste of the hot sauce.
Reply:I sucked my thumb until I was 5. When my teeth started to buck, my mom told me I would need braces if I continued. I stopped immediately...no kidding, never did it again. I don't think that the threat of braces would do much for a three year old, though. They make this really horrible tasting stuff you can paint on his thumbs... I've heard it's pretty successful. Good luck!
Reply:I have the same problem with my 19 month old daughter.
Reply:my daughter is eight, and i just got her to stop sucking her thumb.he still doesn't have any adult teeth yet, so you do have some time. trying to make him stop at three is very brave of you! maybe during the day you could start reminding him that he's getting big, so he's only going to suck his thumb at night. see if you can get him to do that first. then maybe in say 6 mths or so you can work on the nightime one. just do one step at a time, and try not to overwhelm him. he's too little to understand.

i wish you all the luck!
