I had really bad pain in my tooth and had a root canal in november. they put a temporary fill, the a permanent one a few weeks later. about 2 weeks ago, the tooth I had the root canal on cracked. Im not sure if it is worth going back to get it done again for 900 bucks. I checked to see if they would do it fo free or a reduced price since it had been less than 6 months but they would not do it.
Should i get my tooth pulled out for 60 bucks or get a root canal for $900?
It sounds to me that you already had the root canal and since then the tooth has cracked, so if I have got that right you don't need another root canal but a crown. A crown (also called a cap) goes over the tooth and holds it all together. This would be recommendation after any root canal since the tooth will be more brittle with no nerve in it. If the tooth is broken severly (cracked down into the root) then you would need to have it extracted. Whether or not you have the extraction should depend on a couple of things. First, where is the tooth? If it is in the back on the top when you remove the tooth the others surrounding it might shift, and as a result your bite might change. Same in the bottom back, the teeth might shift (tip forward) but in addition the upper tooth might now keep growing down because there is nothing to stop it. Do you have dental insurance? If you do they might cover part of the cost of the crown because it is a new benefits year, if you indeed have the root canal finished and billed for last year. The cost for filling the space with a bridge or implant will be more costly than the crown procedure. But with any treatment, there is no guarantee of success. GOOD LUCK!

Reply:If it hurts very badly and its really not in a noticeable place get the thing pulled, it really helps with the pain...Trust me, just went through it!
Reply:Root canal. On the other hand if you think your teeth are not worth more than $60 apiece get it extracted. Better yet, find a better dentist. If that tooth is not the furthest one back in that arch, eventually the teeth next to it will move into the space, which will screw up the rest of your teeth.
You can save a lot of money by just getting bad teeth extracted. You will need dentures in the future, but those cost far less than taking care of your teeth. When you have to try chewing food with dentures, you will wish you took care of your teeth, but until then it won't make sense to spend all that money!
Reply:I feel your pain, in my mouth and wallet, I had pocket shock.
I had a root canal and 10 years later had to have it removed.
I once did what you did and crack my tooth after a root canal but I still had the temp filling.
I was traveling and and found an old army dentist and he said I should just pull it.
He was yanking and pulling back and fourth and said he thought it'd come out easier, he just laugh.
Good luck with your decision, teeth are a pain in the butt.
Dentist charge way to much
Reply:If it is a tooth in the back, just go ahead and get it pulled. You can go without a back tooth without it affecting you. Besides, do you wanna go through spending all that money and dealing with all that crap? DOesn't seem worth it.
Best of luck to you!
Reply:Take it from me. I just went to the dentist. I only had one tooth in my mouth, the rest were dentures. I had a gold cap and a root canal. The tooth kept hurting. I finally went to the dentist and he tried to remove the tooth. The cap came right off, it was cracked in half. He filed it down to save the root canal. Root canal hurt like heck. The jagged ends kept cutting into my gum. Finally went and had root taken out. Got infection. Look if you ask me get that tooth taken out. Save yourself alot of grief.
Reply:If has only been 6 moths they should pay the bill. When you pay so much money to keep a tooth and the job they do doesnt even hold up for a year, that is sad,
Reply:I had a root canal done and my dentist told me to be very careful eating hard stuff like nuts and ice on that side of my mouth. All I am waiting to place the crown that will protect the tooth from cracking. So the way I see it is this: it is better to have teeth than no teeth. Secondly, the dentist to the best of my knowledge shouldn't be doing a root canal again, all the nerves were already taken out. What they should be doing is repairing the tooth and placing a crown, so that this damage will not re-occur (the tooth cracking). The dentist is not at fault for the tooth cracking but he is if he hadn't given you advice as to the process and what a root canal does to the tooth and what to avoid to prevent this from happening. When you do a root canal it is inevitable that you will have to get a crown. Taking out the roots of the tooth makes it more susceptible to breakage, since it is now weakened. Remember it is hollower than it was before, even though the spaces are now filled. So keep the tooth, get a second opinion and get a crown. Most importantly I try to research every procedure before it is done to me so that I can ask questions and I will be aware if something is wrong or just feels weird. You need to find a good endodontist (someone who specialises in root canal treatments) and get treatment asap.
