Why do you need to wear your retainer?

My dentist tells me that I need to wear it or else my teeth will shift. Well what about after three years when I don't have to wear it? Is it just for them to make an extra buck or two?

Why do you need to wear your retainer?
Just listen to them! I didn't, and I regret it now... Just wear it in your sleep every once and a while at the minimum...
Reply:you need to wear your retainer because the dentist said to wear it it could make your teeth ugly if you don't wear it... Report It

Reply:Oh. is your name Kyle Ross.? Report It

Reply:I never heard of wearing it just for 3 weeks I heard of people wearing it to sleep because they grind their teeth.
Reply:wear ur retainer at night because ur teeth will shift back 2 normal
Reply:Well, I'm a bad example because I don't wear mine. For shame! But I know you are supposed to so your teeth don't shift. But so far so good for me (5 yrs) so I'm hopin' for the best!
Reply:FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WEAR THE RETAINERS!!

My brother didnt wear em, and his teeth shifted something HORRIBLE!!!! He would not wear them and bite a pen a lot.....not too much later, his front teeth had a gap again AND were buckin' out!

WEAR THEM , PLEASE!! you wont be sorry later on!
Reply:you need to wear your retainer because your teeth will shift. my friend has had her braces of for like 10 years and her teeth have basically moved back! if i were you i would just wear the retainer.
Reply:The retainer retains the shape because you're teeth have been moving around its possible that they may move back out of shape. The retainer keeps them in shape until your teeth/gums are at a point where they wont shift too much if at all.

Plus, they like majored in that stuff in college.

They know what they're talking about.
Reply:A retainer retains the position of your teeth after orthodontic work has been done. Your dentist is right... obviously. He/she would know. Without the retainer, your teeth will tend to move back toward the position they were originally in.
Reply:after a couple years..you can stop wearing it everynight..

like once a month or so.

your teeth can still move after a few years.
Reply:I'm 26 and I still wear my retainer from when i was 18! My teeth shift over the day, so I just wear mine to bed at night, and by morning my teeth are for the most part back to normal.
Reply:noo ... its because when you get your braces off you still need some support in your teeth so they stay that way. if you dont wear it then ur teeth will shift and they will have gaps.. just wear it and your teeth will be fine !

good luck
Reply:no they work my mom never used hers and hers are not straight anymore but go head and dont wear it there your teeth and waste all of the money spent on braces
Reply:wearing a retainer is a good idea. trust me i thought they were useless and was VERY mad when i was told i had to wear one. i was so excited to get my braces off and then they tell me i have to wear this ****. but i found after a week of not wearing it my bottom teeth began to move. after about 6 months-a yr you only have to wear it at night.
Reply:I don't know how old you are, but the younger you are, the more shifting and growing - especially if all you wisdom teeth are not in yet, or in but not fully exposed. The older you are, the less growth - some shifting yes - but not as much as when you are a young whipper snapper.
Reply:If you can help it, wear your retainers as often as possible. I thought my orthodontist was just trying to make extra money off me too %26amp; I stopped wearing my retainers after a month. Now, half a year later, my bottom row of teeth have shifted back to their original positions!

Don't waste your money %26amp; just wear the retainers. If you don't want to deal with a lisp during the day, just wear them at night %26amp; be sure to wash them out often.
Reply:your teeth will always shift back...but it just depends how much after you stop wearing your retainer and how long you wore your retainer and how crooked your teeth were

but seriously just deal and wear it...don't waste your parents thousands of dollars k
Reply:The truth is, your teeth will always want to shift back to they originally were. Think of them as rubber bands, you are stretching the rubber band when you wear braces. When you take off the braces, the teeth or "rubber band" will go back to it's original state. So you need to wear a retainer.
Reply:My daughter wore her retainer for years after getting her braces removed. Her dentist made her a new one after the old one wore out. Five years ago she stopped wearing it because it broke. Her teeth are shifting. When she gets the money, she is having another one made. So if you want to throw all the money down the drain, stop wearing it. They will always try to shift back to the original way they were.
Reply:to keep your teeth trait and not undo all the work the braces did. ANd after about a year or two you will probably only have to wear them while you sleep.
Reply:actually no there not trying to make an extra.and your dentist is telling the truth.if you dont wear you retainer then your teeth will shift then you probly have to get braces once agin......
